What is A Pterygium?


  • A pterygium is an lump of tissue that grows over the cornea. It usually occurs on the nose side of the eye, is non-cancerous and typically grows slowly
  • It can also cause unpleasant symptoms such as the feeling of a foreign body in the eye or a gritty feeling in the eye, and can be a problem cosmetically.

  • Although there are various less invasive treatments available for ptergiums, in some cases surgical removal is required.
  • The procedure takes approximately 30 mins and takes place under a general anaesthetic in a day surgery.

Post Operative Care

  • You will be unable to drive home after the surgery
  • You will require a followup visit with Prof Watson the following day
